New York With My Best Friend :)

Having visited London and Paris, I could not wait to see New York. After spending a lottt of time in Texas, we finally were home for two weeks. Yayyy!!!! By the way, for people who do not know, we live in Virginia, close to Washington D.C.  New York is about four hours (by road) from Virginia and so, we decided to visit New York one weekend while we were home.

I kept confirming with my husband if we were seriously going to New York as he had not booked our travel or stay and it was almost Wednesday. We were planning to leave for NYC on Friday. :/ Oh yes, my best friend with whom I was travelling was none other than my husband. :) Traveling and writing are two things I can never get tired of; you can call them my hobbies! By writing, I mean sharing my personal experiences and not making every article or blog a serious episode. I prefer writing about what I like over the same old facts or evidences that you can find on Wikipedia. I have always wanted to blog but, never had the time, mood or motivation. Thanks to my BFF (best friend for life – husband) for motivating me and telling me how awesome I’m at writing and in general, ;) I finally started writing a blog!! :) I cannot thank him enough for all that he has done for me.:) Anyway, let’s get back to NYC.

Finally, after a lot of questioning and forcing, Puneeth (my husband) confirmed our travel and stay in the city, that’s right, downtown Manhattan! I could not wait to get there. In seconds, my excitement died as my husband said he was taking me night sky diving in NYC! I know it sounds funny but, I had to believe him as he is crazy. Trust me he can find things like this and surprise me or rather, shock me! He loves himself some thrill and adventure. I on the other hand am a person who will run miles away from thrill, adventure or anything that even sounds similar. No way, I was not willing to skydive. I kept dreading the fact that that we had to do this and literally cried on the way saying he had ruined the trip for me.

The city :)
On arriving there, I realized the night skydive was only to irritate me. Fuerza Bruta was the actual plan. It is an off Broadway show involving live music with breathtaking aerial displays in a performance that’s exhilarating. If you enjoy being crazy, love music and do not mind trying something different, it is a must watch. After watching the show, we decided to grab pizza on our way to a club. Oh yes, we were going dancing ;) That was our Friday evening in NYC.

The End of the Fuerza Bruta show.
Our Saturday started with a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge. It is one of the oldest bridges in New York. We walked the entire stretch, starting on the Manhattan side, ending our walk in the Brooklyn Bridge Park. From here, we got a perfect view of the Manhattan skyline including the two major bridges, The Brooklyn Bridge and The Manhattan Bridge. The view was simply stunning! After the bridge, it was time for some lunch and so, we decided to go to ‘Little Italy’. They have amazing restaurants here. Another thing to look out for here are the graffiti; do not miss the alien baby. My cousin and his wife joined us for lunch after which, we went to Central Park. Puneeth’s friend and his wife who live in New York showed us around the park. A sunny day, lot of people, tremendous display of talents (people dancing, playing music, etc.) contributed to the park’s lively atmosphere.

It was around 6 PM, time for us to head towards Rockefeller Centre. It is a complex comprising of 19 commercial buildings, few of which are top of rock observation deck and NBC Studios (Jimmy Fallon’s show is filmed here).   The reason we went there was the Top of the Rock Observation Center. It is an observatory on top of Rockefeller Center, with an ocean-liner style design that offers a beautiful view of the city. We wanted to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, that was not possible as the sun for some reason, did not want to set that day. It was 08 00 pm and he was there, shining bright and refusing to leave. However, we had to, as Times Square and Max Brenner (Chocolate Bar according to me) were waiting for me. :) I’m a chocoholic! Ask me to have chocolates and only chocolates for a meal and trust me, I will. I have in the past and I will in the future. Nothing has stopped me, not even my mom’s yelling! ;) Puneeth kept talking about Max Brenner and I could not wait to go there.  Before heading that direction, we stopped at Times Square. It was crowded. In fact, my mom saw a picture of me in Times Square and had nothing to say about how pretty I looked and instead said “look at the crowd, it’s more than what you see in Bangalore (my birth place and most favorite city in the entire world), India”. After spending some time at Times square, we had dinner and went to the chocolate bar. I had the best hot chocolate ever at that place. After enjoying our lovely drink, we went to Webster Hall, which is one of NYC’s oldest night club and concert venue. It has been operating since 1886. That was it for that day; we were exhausted after the 10+ miles of walking from morning.

Sunday was the day I was most excited about. The reason being, a dream of mine coming true. I had three cities in mind that I wanted to visit which were London, Paris and New York and in these cities, a must visit for me were Tower Bridge (LON), Eiffel Tower (PAR) and Statue of Liberty (NYC). I have visited Tower Bridge and Eiffel Tower. It was finally time for Statue of Liberty. Before visiting the statue, we stopped at   Wall Street and clicked a few pictures with the Charging Bull. From there, we walked to 9/11 memorial. This Place got me emotional. It was hard for me to stay there. We walked around for a few minutes and left. Our next destination was Statue of Liberty. A ferry dropped us to the Liberty Island (The Statue is on this island). This ferry first takes you to the Liberty Island followed by Ellis Island. We did not visit the Ellis Island as we were running out of time. We had purchased tickets that would allow us access to the pedestal on which Lady Liberty stands. The museum that told us about the history of the statue was the most interesting part of that day, for me.  Finally, after all that sightseeing, it was shopping time! We went to Times Square and spent a few hours shopping. This marked the end of my NYC trip. It was time for us to head back to Virginia.

I had heard a lot about NYC and could not wait to get here and when I did, I was highly impressed. There is so much to see, do and learn in this city. A crazy number of people visit the city every day. This city literally does not sleep, there is something happening at every hour of the day. You can never get bored of this place. I would definitely be going back, less as a tourist and more to enjoy all that the city can offer. :)

Home Away From Home---Chicago

After having spent an entire month in a hotel, my husband and I finally decided that we would fly to Chicago and spend the Memorial Day weekend at our aunt and uncle’s place. We left from Texas on Friday, in the evening. The drive to the airport was the scariest drive of my life. It was raining like crazy. I did not speak a word and was praying for the rain to stop.  Thank God, it did finally and we reached the airport safe. :)

We arrived at Chicago at 08:00 pm. Tired, sleepy and hungry, we could not wait to eat home cooked food, after a very long time.  After a super tasty meal, we called it a day. I had heard a lot about Chicago from my cousin and uncle and was very excited to explore this city.

The Windy City - Chicago

We started our tour from the John Hancock Centre which is a 100-story, 1,127-foot skyscraper, located at North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, United States. In this center, we visited the observatory called 360 Chicago. This gives you a panoramic view of the city. I was speechless, the view was stunning. The city looked like a beautiful portrait. My husband likes adventure and thrill whereas I, run away from it. The new thrill at that place was TILT. You stand on a platform that tilts at three different angles to offer you a tilted view of the entire city. He purchased tickets for this without even asking my uncle and me. We thought it would be a normal glass window from where you see the city. After a while, this glass window tilted the first time. I least expected it and was shivering! The third tilt was horror! I could not wait for it to be over.

The view from 360 Chicago.

My cousin, who also lives in the states, always told me she loved shopping in Chicago. The next stop was shopping at the water tower. A lot of pretty stores, sadly, I had only an hour to shop and made maximum use of it. J It was a bright sunny day and we decided to take the world famous architecture tour. Unfortunately, the tickets were not available for that evening and we had to postpone the tour to the next day.

Our next stop was the Millennium Park. We walked along the magnificent mile and I will not be wrong in saying, “this is a shopper’s paradise”. I was lost and wanted to stay on that road forever. :) We finally reached the millennium park and headed towards the Cloud gate (Bean). This piece is sculpted by the Indian born British artist, Anish Kapoor. Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the place where a lot of concerts happen is also located in the Millennium Park.

It was late evening and time for us to head to our aunt’s friend’s place for a Dosa (Crepe, the Indian version) Party. My husband, aunt and uncle always told me how great their dosas were; I was looking forward to that evening. The food was delicious and I absolutely loved the time spent with their friends.

We started off the next day with the Architecture River tour conducted by the Wendella Boats. OH MY GOD, the view was super pretty. I’m someone who loves water and anything to do with it. This boat ride was what I was waiting for!  During this tour, a guide explained to us the history and architecture of the city. Our uncle told us a trip to Chicago is not complete without this tour and I could not agree more. Our next stop was the Shedd Aquarium. It is the home to many pretty fish and sea animals. The best part of this place was the Sting Ray experience. We were allowed to touch the sting ray. Scary right? The ones I met were young and friendly. :)

Lake Michigan (Architecture Tour)

It felt like this was the holiday I was waiting for. My husband and I got to spend time with family, eat home cooked food that we craved for and also be touristy in this very pretty city. This was not the first time for my husband, he has visited Chicago previously. However, it was my first time but, definitely not my last. I will  visit this city again, two days were too less. However, that did not stop me from falling in love with this city. Having family around made me feel at home. I could not have asked for a better holiday. :)

The City That Stole My Heart... Edinburgh. :)

On June 27 2013, my sister and I arrived at the Edinburgh train station. On stepping out of the train station, we were smitten by the city. The ancient architecture made us feel like we were back to the 17th century. The city was so beautiful. We could not stop praising it.

The City

Our train from Birmingham was at 06:30 am. We decided the previous night that we would rest for a while after reaching Edinburgh. However, on arrival we forgot about the rest and only wanted to explore the place. Even before checking into the hostel, we started sightseeing. The moment we walked out of the train station, we saw what Scotland is famous for, the bagpipers. We were excited and could not stop ourselves from getting a picture with him. The bagpiper was playing in front of the Scott monument. This is a gothic monument for the Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott. For me, this tower looked a little spooky. We were there to explore and decided this is where we would start.  The tower has various platforms. We stopped at every platform and looked at the city from there. It only got better. After climbing a total of 287 steps, we reached the final platform. “Mission accomplished” we said. The journey to the top was scary. It felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie while climbing the stairs. The view from the top was mesmerizing. We got a panoramic view of the city and I have not seen something more beautiful. Our next stop was the Scottish National Gallery, which is an art gallery and museum. This was an interesting place. After visiting the museum, we decided to have lunch and check into the hostel. We did not know that the hostel was almost an hour’s walk from where we were. It was late evening by the time we reached there so, we decided to call it a day.

                                                           The Scott Monument.

                                          Bagpiper

After having walked a lot the previous day, we decided to take the 48 hour hop on, hop off tour bus (you have a 24 hour bus tour option too). This bus takes us around the city and stops at all the tourist destinations. We can get off the bus spend as much time as we want at those places and board the next bus that arrives at the designated stops. That is a convenient option. There is so much to see in Edinburgh and walking to all these places is impossible. Hanover Street, Princes Street Gardens,  St. John’s Church, Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh Castle, National Museum of Scotland, Museum of Childhood, Scottish Parliament, Our Dynamic Earth, Palace of Holyrood House, Burns Monument, George Street, Charlotte Square, The Mound, Lawnmarket and Grassmarket were the places the buses would stop. We got off at a few stops on day one and the remaining on day two. Although, we did not spend a lot of time at each of these places, we made it a point to at least visit all of them.

Here are a few places that I felt I should write about:

Royal Botanic Garden: A huge garden! This place is a scientific center where people get to study the various plant species. I did not know these many species existed; I have so much to learn! Frankly, I have forgotten most of the names of the plants we saw there. Oh, poor memory.

Royal Botanical Garden

Edinburgh Castle: This castle dominates the skyline of Edinburgh. I was dazzled by the view. Now, I know why this is Scotland’s most visited destination! Being a student of history, I stood at each door and read what was written. It only made me fall more in love with this city. After clicking a few pictures and learning a lot more about the castle and city, we moved to the next stop.

The Entrance to the castle

                                          Edinburgh Castle

View of the city from the castle.

Scotch-Whisky Experience: We were so excited to visit this place and could not wait to see what it had to offer. The tour started off with a barrel ride through the replica of a distillery. During this tour, we were told the history of Scottish whisky and also a brief description of how it is brewed. At the end of the tour, we were told about the different aromas and flavors of Scottish whisky. Finally, we had reached the best part of the tour, the tasting. I chose the fruity flavor. Frankly, I took a sip and did not like the taste. Then, I realized I had jumped the gun. We were instructed the specifics of whisky tasting following which, I entered a whole new world of whiskies. This entire tour lasts for about an hour, we absolutely loved it. An experience I would definitely recommend to people visiting Scotland.

                                                                The Experience

Our Dynamic Earth focuses on facilitating a better public understanding of the processes that have shaped the Earth (known as earth science). It was day one of dino flash week (all about dinosaurs). There were a lot of games and events taking place. My sister and I participated in the dino race. It is a race between a dinosaur and you, if you beat the dino, you win and if you lose, you are the dino’s dinner. My sister won so, she was the winner and I lost so, I was dinner. Well, everyone who knows me also knows that I’m extremely conscious about the way I run. I hate running in front of people. I have a funny running style. Apart from playing games, we also watched movies, which educated us about the formation of our planet. A lot of interactive activities made this place extremely interesting even for Arts students like my sister and me.
There are a lot more places to visit and talk about in this city. These are a few favorites of mine.

                                           The dino flash week.

Sisters on a tour and no shopping! Has that ever happened? I don’t think so. After having visited all these beautiful places, we topped it all off with shopping. Even the malls and stores in Edinburgh have the same charm as the places we visited earlier; they look like ancient buildings or castles with a gothic touch to it.

The city center (Shopping center), Edinburgh

It was the 30th of July, the time to say goodbye. We did not want to but, had to. Being a student of history, journalism and tourism, I could not have asked for a better place to visit. I got to learn a lot, visit many places and also, write about them. Would I want to visit this city again? Yes, in the blink of an eye :)

How I fell in love with YOGA! :)

I was one of those who always thought yoga was slow and boring. I preferred spending more time at the gym than going for a yoga class. I was wrong. No form of exercise has benefited me as much as yoga.

During my tenure at Shaimak Davar’s Institute of Performing Arts, the SDIPA classes, we were taught surya namaskar (sun salutations) as a part of the workout routine. This was probably the only asana (exercise) I knew of yoga. I had to quit SDIPA as I was leaving to the United Kingdom for further studies. After having quit the dance company, I started working out at the gym. A few weeks before leaving to England, I decided to give yoga a shot.  The only reason being I was so used to group fitness classes like dance, aerobics that the gym turned out to be boring as I had no company.

The First day of yoga, was disappointing. I could not do a single asana and found the class extremely slow. It felt like I had not burnt a single calorie. However, this did not stop me from going to class. I told myself things would get better. Guess what, they did. It got better each day. After a few weeks, I noticed I was much better than day one. That was when I realized one has to give oneself time and put in extra effort in order to get there.

I had just begun liking yoga but, had to stop taking the class as I had to move to England. After having spent a few weeks in England, I started missing the gym and surprisingly, yoga! So, I decided to sign up for the gym in the University. Luckily for me, the gym offered group fitness classes like Zumba, Body Combat, Yoga and many more. The yoga class was two days a week (Tuesday and Sunday). Initially, I attended only the Tuesday’s class. After a month and a half, my liking for yoga had turned into love. If I missed a class I felt like I've missed an entire week of workout. Hence, I started attending the class on Sunday as well. I was so in love with yoga and did not want to miss a single hour of practice. The yoga instructor was extremely inspiring and one of the reasons for me to start enjoying yoga. Her name is Olga. She came up with something new and interesting, every week. During every class, she explained the importance of yoga and how our body benefited from it. Honestly, it took me a few months to notice the benefits.

Partner Yoga with my instructor, Olga

                                            Sirsasana - Head Stand

The benefits of yoga are both physical and mental. It physically helps in improving your flexibility, muscle strength and perfects your posture. It also prevents break down of joints  and protects your spine. There are a plenty of asanas that help in strengthening your spine. Regular yoga practice improves coordination, reaction time, memory and concentration. Yoga is vast; we do not practice asanas alone, we are also taught the technique of breathing (pranayama, kapalabhati) which helps in removing the toxins from within the body. Another important aspect of yoga is the bandhas (body locks). The bandhas are Uddiana Bandha, Valandhara Bandha and Mula Bandha. These three bandhas together are known as Maha Bandha. After the body has been prepared by thorough practice in the different asanas and clarified by the breathing exercises, the Yogi (person who practices yoga) is ready for the Bandhas. These may not be attained immediately, since they depend on a full state of body and mental relaxation for successful attainment. Yoga has a million benefits and the ones I have mentioned are just a few.

                                                    Padmasana - Lotus Pose

It has been years of practicing yoga and I am only falling more in love with it. I have had wonderful instructors, namely Olga, Claire, Dhanshree, Deelu Lama and Prachi. They have been extremely supportive and one of the reasons for me having developed a flair for yoga. Each instructor has their own method of teaching and I have learnt so much from every session I have been to.  I also wanted to take up yoga as a profession. Due to various reasons, that has remained a dream.

I got married a few months ago and had to move to the States. My husband is an IT consultant and travels on work, every week. Being new to this country, I had to travel with him. This made it very hard for me to enroll for a yoga class here. I had stopped practicing yoga for a few weeks. It felt as if I was missing something. I realized I was missing yoga and the peace of mind I achieved after an hour’s practice. Now, I practice yoga at home thrice a week. It keeps me calm and surprisingly, I need no company. I enjoy practicing yoga alone as much as I do in a group.

                                                         Hanumanasana - Monkey Pose

Eka pada Raja Kapotasana - Mermaid Pose

A lot of them still think yoga is slow and does not help in losing weight. I have to say, I've tried various physical exercises and none of them have benefited me more than yoga has.  It definitely takes time to show results but, once it does you’ll love it and never want to stop. I was skeptical about starting yoga but now, I love it so much that it has become a part of my daily schedule. For me, it is not only about losing weight it is also about having fun while I work out. Yoga is full of benefits and a lot of fun. You have so much to learn. From the simplest to the most complicated asanas, it’s a new challenge every day! It has been a little more than three years since I’m practicing yoga and I have only seen myself grow and get better. It has become a hobby now. Remember, you are your own competition. Never give up in the beginning and blame yourself for being bad at it. Practice is what makes man perfect. :)

My experience at the Hamilton Pool.

My experience at the Hamilton Pool.

Every so often do we come across a place that can take your breath away! We happened to visit one of those places, this spring – The Hamilton Pool. A thousand years ago, the dome of an underground river collapsed which led to the creation of the Hamilton Pool Preserve. The pool is a 45 minutes’ drive from Austin, Texas and is a popular summer destination for the residents and visitors of Austin. This preserve is also home for a variety of birds that take nest in here, the most common being the Golden–Cheeked Warbler. It is a great picnic spot and a popular escape to beat the heat.

                                          The tree canopy

                                          The Hamilton Pool on arrival

We were there on a beautiful spring day and had to wait for about 45 minutes before we got entry in to this place. I must say, the wait was totally worth it! Even before reaching our destination, we were awestruck by the tree canopy that caught our attention as we hiked the short trail towards the pool.  In spite of it being a hot spring day, the limestone around the pool kept the preserve cool and calm. My husband and I were captivated by the panorama of the pool. We were not confident enough to swim and decided to just get our feet wet. However, the ‘not knowing swimming’ did not stop us from getting under the water fall.

                                          The very pretty waterfall

                                          The path along the Pool

After having spent a few hours at the pool, on our way back, a trail along the river side caught our attention and we decided to hike along that route. The hike was not as short I expected and if you are thinking it was the trail that was long. No, it was not, it was my husband’s sense of humor (or the lack of it) that made me feel like it took an hour. Finally, we had reached our destination, the Pedernales River. The river was serene and kept us at peace. After all the "humor", this was exactly what I needed. Nature was truly at her best!

The trail leading to the river

                                          The trail along the river
